Maricopa County Prosecutor’s Race 2024: Who Will Win the Election?

PHOENIX — Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell will likely maintain her role as county prosecutor as ballots continue to be counted Wednesday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, she led Democratic challenger Tamika Wooten by 8.5 percentage points in the race for office.

Who were the candidates in the 2024 Maricopa County Bar election?

Mitchell was first appointed to the position in 2022 after the late Allister Adel resigned.

She was chosen for her past experience, having previously served as acting Maricopa County prosecutor in 2019 when Bill Montgomery was appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court.

Mitchell then won election to serve out the remainder of Adel’s term. victory over Democrat Julie Gunnigle later that year.

Mitchell filed a statement of interest to seek re-election as the Republican candidate in April 2023.

Wooten, an attorney with 34 years of experience, has served as Glendale’s chief prosecutor and as a municipal judge.

What did Rachel Mitchell do before the 2024 Maricopa County Bar elections?

During her tenure, she launched a campaign to combat organized retail crime and one more for reduce teenage violence through the valley.

She was also an outspoken advocate for law enforcement and spoke widely on issues related to opioids.

“We have been able to tackle gun violence and organized retail crime,” Mitchell said in a social media post Tuesday. “But I also want to continue to fight against juvenile violence and the fentanyl that flows across our border.”

“I want to continue to advance the work of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office,” Mitchell said. “It takes experience and leadership.”
