JoJo Siwa’s ‘special’ new girlfriend changes her stance on going public with the relationship

JoJo Siwa reveals a particularly complex aspect of the work of a public figure.

The 21-year-old singer and dancer appeared on the panel during Rhode Island Comic Con on Friday, November 1st, moderated by PEOPLE’s. Dorie Jackson. While there, Siwa opened up about various aspects of her personal life and career, including dating in public.

“You know, it’s interesting. My mother always told me, “The whole world doesn’t need to know everything. JoJo. You can keep some things secret.” And I was like, “Yeah, yeah, totally.” Dance Moms said the star. “Secrets are hard to keep. They are so difficult to store. When you get that excited about something… I was kind of born to share my life with the world, and I’m okay with that and I love it.”

The “Guilty Pleasure” singer noted that “when it comes to relationships and stuff, for me it really depends on the other person.”

“I mean, I started to have a great relationship. When I first came out, I was in a very, very good relationship,” she explained. “We were young. I mean, I was 17 and she was 16. Chances are – sorry if someone’s 17 or 16 – but chances are your relationship won’t work at that age. And if you’re older than that, or If you’re 17 and 16 and you see them and they think they’re getting married, you can laugh at it because we all know they’re not. Sometimes things work out for some high school sweethearts. It’s a very small percentage, but it was very nice, typical.”

“But then, after that, I had a public relationship with someone else that wasn’t the best—it seemed like it was the best, but it wasn’t really the best. And then when it ended, it really wasn’t the best and it just scared me to share my relationship publicly,” she admitted at the time. “It wasn’t something the world was really doing. It was more something that happened between the two of us. And I thought: you know what? Let me just not do this. share more relationships.”

“And everything worked out for me. I had one serious relationship, but it seemed like two affairs, and no one knew about either of them. So I’ll accept it. Well achieved,” she added.

However, everything changed for Siwa after meeting 19-year-old Wilson.

“Just three months ago I started a relationship with an incredible girl and it was exciting,” she said. “I was okay with talking about her publicly. She feels special and we are in a very convenient location. I’ve never been in this place before where I’m in a relationship with her.”

Siwa added: “I’m so young too. I’m 21. She’s young too. She’s only 19. We’re both still figuring out life and I think I’ve accepted that. I accepted that we both understand life. . We’re not perfect, but we have fun. I love a girl. She loves me and we have a good time.”

Siwa became a household name after appearing on Lifetime. Dance Moms like a child. She joined him in 2015 for the fifth season.

After participating in the reality show, Siwa achieved success by signing a contract with Nickelodeon. She has starred in many network shows and television films, including Thunderbolts And School of work.

She also launched a successful music career that has since expanded to include more adult music with the songs “Karma” and “Guilty Pleasure.”

Siwa previously made headlines in January 2021 after come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. She made her relationship public with Wilson in August, sharing a video of “Stories of a Couple at a Dance Class” on her Instagram.

As for whether her public status makes her feel like a role model, Siwa said during a panel at Rhode Island Comic Con that she feels “it’s something that other people force on me.”

“I don’t necessarily ever think to myself, ‘I’m a role model. I need to do this.” I think other people might look at me and say, ‘Oh, you’re a role model,'” she said. “I don’t want to live my life as a role model. I need to be a role model. Or are you watching me because I am a role model, so I need to act like a role model. .I want to live my life and be a good person.”
