Sheriff warns of phone scam

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a newly discovered phone scam in the area.

Officials said scammers are calling citizens, particularly the elderly. They are reported to tell scam victims that their child, grandchild or other relatives are in some kind of danger and therefore money needs to be sent immediately.

In one case in Laurel County, the caller said they needed $1,500.

These scammers can often program familiar phone numbers into their calls, according to the sheriff’s office.

Residents in the area are advised to be wary of such calls.
