Iowa high school volleyball results for Tuesday

CLASS 3A QUARTER-FINAL

No. 1 Mount Vernon 3, No. 8 Mid-Prairie 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16)

Top rating Mount Vernon has one of the best offensive attacks in the state.

The Golden Hawks’ focus on defense helped them advance to state for the first time in 20 seasons.

Chalk it up to the Mustangs’ offense, but it certainly didn’t come easy.

Coach Maggie Willems’ team needed every bit of its offensive skill to fend off the Golden Hawks.

Louisville hitter Chloe Meester led the charge for the Mustangs (43-4) with 14 kills. For Arkansas, Sidney Laue had 10. For Mid-Prairie (33-9), Jovie Evans had 12 kills and 11 digs.

In the fifth game, second-ranked Western tied two sets at 13 points each, made two deciders and upset seventh-ranked Sioux Center.

Western’s award is an unheard of 24th consecutive semifinal finish.

“The Western Christian tradition… I grew up watching them win state championships,” freshman Morgan Kooyman said. “It’s really fun to finally be a part of this.”

Scarlett Winterfeld led the Western with 21 kills. Bentley Blick added 14 and Kooyman 11.

Margot Schuiteman paced Sioux Center with 16 kills.

#4 Dubuque Wahlert 3, #5 Carroll Kemper 1 (25–18, 22–25, 25–23, 25–17)

At a critical moment, Dubuque Wahlert’s growth as a team was on full display.

After winning the first set, the Golden Eagles lost the second and trailed 22-19 in the third.

With Carroll Kuemper in prime position to take a 2-1 lead, the Golden Eagles dug in.

“I thought they did a great job of keeping their composure,” Wahlert coach Lindsay Beaves said. “I think in the past we would have lost that set and criticized ourselves.”

After a timeout, the No. 4 Golden Eagles went on a five-point run and then maintained control in the fourth set.

Audrey Chiggfree and Anna Rawling led the attack, and Wahlert had 14 kills each. Brianna Wittrock had 19 kills for the Knights, who finished 37-4.

No. 3 West Delaware 3, No. 6 Davenport Assumption 1 (25-19, 25-13, 18-25, 25-20)

Their momentum was declining. Their energy was fading.

After dominating the first two sets and losing the third, West Delaware Hawks needed a push.

“We had to remember that this is a sport and it should be fun,” Hannah Cantwell said. “We upped the intensity and made sure we had fun.”

Winning is fun, and the third-ranked Hawks (39-6) were able to complete a four-set Class 3A quarterfinal triumph.

Assumption (25-9) erased a five-point deficit in the fourth game to deadlock 14-14. But Veda Langel saved the go-ahead goal, and then consecutive blocks from Kate Wenger and Lauren LeClair gave the Hawks an 18-14 lead.

The Knights never came closer than three points again.

Cantwell led all hitters with 20 kills. LeClair added 13 points for the Hawks; Brook Krogmann scored 11 points, including the game-tying score.

CLASS 2A QUARTER-FINAL

No. 1 Denver 3, No. 11 Boyden-Hull 0 (25–21, 25–23, 25–21)

Jamie Johnson called it “a bit of a mess at times.”

Top-ranked Denver has had some issues, especially behind the service line.

However, when it mattered most, the Cyclones had great success. Although the Denver coach was concerned about the pitching, he was proud of his team’s determination.

“I appreciated the fact that the girls weren’t tense,” Johnson said. “They stayed calm, kept their composure and found a way to win.”

The Cyclones (45-3) were often their own worst enemies, throwing 12 innings in 73 attempts.

Twin sisters Bailey and Grace Mullihan led Denver with eight kills each. Alaina Akers had 13 digs. Elsie Hogue led Boyden-Hull (19-13) with 14 kills. Jenna Wollink conducted 17 excavations.

#2 Eddyville EBF 3, #8 Iowa City Regina 0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-19)

Sport after sport, season after season, the Shafer twins of Eddyville-Blakeburg-Fremont are a unique pairing.

“We have a weird connection,” Kate said. “We are each other’s support.”

In the fall, it all comes down to this: Kate sits down, Molly rocks, and the Rockets roll.

The first set ended 22-22, but Molly Schafer had three kills in the final 3-1 run.

“We were close to them in the first set,” Regina coach Lauren Hansen said. “We didn’t serve aggressively enough to get them out of the system, and they hit through our block.”

No. 4 Dyke-New Hartford 3, No. 5 Aplington-Parkersburg 0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-16)

Some names may have changed, but the result, at least on Tuesday afternoon, looked very familiar.

Dyke-New Hartford may have lost three all-state players from last year’s 50-0 Class 2A state volleyball championship team, but those who took their place looked more than capable of delivering back-to-back titles to the Wolverines.

Coach Diane Harms’ team (30-15) controlled the game from start to finish Tuesday.

“The girls came in this year, and for a lot of them, it was the first time they were actually on the floor,” said Harms, who is seeking her 10th state title. “They make the most of their opportunities.

“These are very experienced players who were just waiting for their chance. They’ve been here before as part of the team, but to actually be able to play on the court is something special.”

Izzy Norton led the Wolverines with 12 kills. Peyton Klooster paced the Falcons (36-7) with eight kills.

No. 3 Dyersville Beckman 3, No. 6 South Hardin 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22)

The Blazers keep coming at you. And that depth was on full display in the quarterfinal matchup against South Hardin.

“We have a lot of players, a lot of options that we can turn to,” senior Caitlin Schmitt said. “It’s nice to work as hard as you can and then have a break and cheer from the bench.”

The first match ended 18-18 before Beckman scored seven straight points. Schmitt closed it out with a block-block-kill sequence.

Beckman scored 11 of the final 17 points in Game 2 and then came back from an early 11-5 deficit in the final.

Schmitt hit back-to-back kills in a crucial four-point spurt that gave the Blazers a 21-18 lead.

Schmitt and freshman Joy Burkle led the Blazers with nine kills each. Ava Burkle added seven.

Anna Knepper had 18 assists and 13 turnovers.

CLASS 1A QUARTER-FINAL

No. 1 Ankeny Christian 3 No. 8 Don Bosco 0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-17)

Ankeny Christian had a fast start Tuesday night.

Katie Quick, that is.

The all-state setter was in the zone during the first set of the Eagles’ Class 1A quarterfinal against No. 8 Don Bosco.

Quick, the reigning 1A state player of the year, had 14 assists in the first set alone and finished with 34 assists when Ankeny Christian made the shot.

The Eagles (39-5) are seeking a third straight state title. They have never lost a set to a 1A opponent this season and have never been seriously threatened by the Dons.

Carly Craighead had 14 kills and Anna Weathers had 11.

No. 7 Janesville 3, No. 2 St. Ansgar 0 (25–23, 27–25, 25–22)

Janesville’s broker was money. Zoe Barnes and Dani Hughes hit over .400.

“We worked hard to find the connection between the hitter and the setter,” Barnes said. “(St. Ansgar) made a pretty good block, but we were able to beat the corners.”

Barnes had 17 kills and Hughes had 10. Both made only one error.

Leading by the set, Janesville (25-17) fought back from a 24-23 deficit in the second game. After scoring 25 points, Hayden Anderson scored back-to-back kills.

The final set was tied 16-16 before a 7-3 spurt finally put the Wildcats in control.

No. 4 Oakland Riverside 3, No. 5 North Tama 2 (18-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 15-11)

After losing the first set, Riverside fought back to win the second set and went strong in the third set to take an 11-point lead.

North Tama fought back to take the set, which could easily have been the beginning of the end for the Bulldogs.

“When you declare, it’s usually the top eight teams in your class,” Riverside coach Brooke Flathers said. “It will be a dogfight and everyone is trying to save their season. Our girls are no different.”

The Bulldogs (39-3) are not only alive, but they are one of only four left.

Riverside relied on a balanced attack to advance. Sophia Taylor led the way with 17 kills. Bentley Rhone added 13 points and Ellie Henderson 12.

Cruise Ewoldt led North Tama with 26 kills. Lily Sell added 13.

#6 Conrad BCLUW 3, #3 Fort Madison Holy Trinity 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19)

Trailing 22-19 in the first set, the Comets went to work. A kill from Sarah Gerber tied the game and then an ace from Claire Gallentine gave BCLUW the lead for good.

BCLUW rode the momentum, jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second game and rolled on.

Holy Trinity (29-13) led 9-6 in the third set, but BCLUW went on an 8-2 run to lead the rest of the match.

BCLUW’s Grace Farnsworth led all attackers with 15 kills (and recorded a team-high 17 digs); Olivia Peters added 13.

The Comets played a cleaner game, committing just 12 offensive errors to the Crusaders’ 22.
