Bluebonnet is an area near Robstown Early College High School that has had flooding issues for years. In 2020citizens voted for a bond to fix drainage problems in the area, but the money remained in an escrow account, causing the project to stall.

Latest update It was back in October that a $48 million bond to address drainage issues was proposed on the November ballot, but voters later rejected the proposal. KRIS 6 NEWS asked Willie Garcia about bail waivers.

“Where is all the money we had? As for the grants, those 5.5 million that were awarded four years ago, let’s dig in and investigate them and then get to work,” Garcia said.

Garcia said it was important to him to run because he is a Bluebonnet resident and has been personally affected by flooding issues.

“I got flooded, my whole neighborhood of Bluebonnet, and it was only five to seven inches of rain,” Garcia said. “Imagine if we get a CAT 1 or a tropical storm, we could literally have bigger problems.”

For the first time in nearly a year, three seats will be filled in Drainage District No. 2. In December 2023, then-Commissioner David “Petey” Martinez resigned to become Robstown’s mayor. His place was never taken.

Robert Gonzalez said he is glad the commission is back to three members.

“I want to be able to work with the other two commissioners in the office and understand that what we do is going to be done for the people, for the public,” Gonzalez said.
