There are many others online word games now, but I’m still playing the New York Times Wardle game every day. Today it’s not only an old friend, but also a good warm-up for Connections, Strands and the rest.

If you’re rethinking your need for a real answer, you might want to try tips from one of these stories.

Still need a starting word? One person told me that he simply looks around and chooses a five-letter object he notices as a starting word, such as SOFA or CHAIR. I prefer to use starter words that have the most common letters used in English words. For starters, I like TRAIN, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I read that people use the financial term ROATEbut I like to use words that I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you’ve read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether the letters you guessed are in the puzzle or not, and whether they are in the same place you guessed. New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle for a seven-figure sum in 2022. Wardle famously created a game for his partner and allowed her to narrow down 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to 2,500, creating a database of answers. It was also convenient that he had a name that combined the word “word.”

A Times spokesperson told me that the very first Wordle is listed as having appeared on June 19, 2021, and the newspaper On March 15, I celebrated my thousandth word in the game.. Spoiler: the thousandth word was ERUPT. For example: “Dad will explode if Wardle is so cool that he loses his streak.”
