PSL boss Dr Irwin Khoza wants umpires banned from betting

  • While punters are prohibited from betting on local football matches, PSL chief Dr Irvin Khoza said the same restriction should be given to referees.

PSL The boss said referees have too much power in matches, but he said SAFA is the body that should enforce the betting ban.

Since the start of the local football season, there have been several incidents in which referees made controversial decisions and the team was suspended after official complaints.

Irvine Khoza wants to protect the image of local football

Khoza talks about betting on local football in tweet below:

According to SportsWireKhoza said a blanket ban on betting is needed, especially after the gambling company Betway became the general sponsor Mzansi top division.

Khoza said:

“I think they (the referees) are also influenced by the initiative we are talking about because they are the most important people and are responsible for the image of the game. They are the main people on the field and it is very important for them to cooperate, but I cannot force it.”

Fans want better refereeing

Local football fans have taken to social media to claim match fixing could be behind some of the most controversial refereeing decisions in local football.

Leabua Jonathan Lamond spoke in defense of the judges:

“Bad refereeing only 10% of the time; Most matches are fair play. We don’t watch other matches.”

Simza Beke le Beke identified two referees:

“Abongile Tom and Luxolo Badi. Ooh, these two, ouch.”

Mpiyakhe Mpiksen Mthimkulu criticized the judges:

South African football is deteriorating because of the refereeing.”

Glenn Nicolaas Swart is upset:

“Corruption to the core.”

Nathi Sizwe Gumede raised the question:

“The officials are so poor that I don’t know if it’s match-fixing or incompetence.”

PSL offers giant carrot to league champions

According to Brief newsPSL boss Dr Irvin Khoza has announced that the 2024/2025 league champions will receive large cash prize of R20 million.

The new prize has been recorded as one of the biggest prizes in African football and is seen as a huge boost for PSL teams.
