Health workers are ready to go on strike due to delayed salaries

Health workers protest at Stormont over pay. Unison union members gathered ahead of a health committee meeting.

Workers are angry that their 2024/25 pay rise has not yet been passed, meaning their pay lags behind that of healthcare workers in the rest of the UK.

Maura McKenna, co-chair of Unison’s regional health committee, said Northern Ireland health workers were frustrated with their treatment.

“We are told that the minister would like to pay this amount, but he does not have the money to do so. “We have staff working 1p above the minimum wage and this is unacceptable.”

Unison represents the interests of more than 27,000 healthcare workers in Northern Ireland.
