Democrat Jacky Rosen could win a US Senate seat in Nevada

Scripps News and Decision Desk Headquarters Project Democrat Jacky Rosen will retain his U.S. Senate seat in Nevada, defeating Republican Sam Brown.

Republicans had hoped to gain another Senate seat they would control in 2025. A Brown victory would give Republicans more leverage to pass legislation pushed by President-elect Donald Trump. It would also make it easier for Trump’s cabinet picks to pass confirmation votes.

As of Thursday, Republicans held a 52-46 margin of victory, with votes still being counted in Pennsylvania and Arizona.

In Pennsylvania, Republicans could gain another seat if David McCormick maintains his lead over incumbent Democrat Bob Casey Jr. In Arizona, Democrat Ruben Gallego will maintain his lead over Republican Kari Lake. The Arizona seat is currently held by the retiring Kyrsten Sinema, an independent candidate who is caucusing with Democrats.

Meanwhile, Republicans are still vying for leadership positions. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced earlier this year that he plans to step down from his leadership post when the new Congress convenes in January.

While many changes are likely to happen in the Republican-led Senate, McConnell said Wednesday there is one thing that won’t go away.

“One of the most encouraging results of the Senate going Republican is that the filibuster will survive,” he said.
