Mass Effect is officially getting a TV adaptation on Amazon

It’s been several years since reports surfaced that Amazon was trying to adapt Mass Effect for television, but finally – as N7 day approaches again – the show has become official.

The Mass Effect TV show was first announced back in 2021, with former BioWare lead writer Mac Walters explaining that various factors influenced the company’s development. shifting my original vision for a film adaptation towards something for a smaller screen. Later that year, reports emerged claiming that Amazon ‘close to deal’ for Mass Effect seriesas part of the ongoing promotion of science fiction and fantasy stories.

And now these reports have been confirmed. Diversity speaks A Mass Effect TV series is now officially in development at Amazon, with Fast and Furious 9 (aka F9: The Fast Saga) screenwriter Daniel Casey serving as writer and executive producer. Casey isn’t exactly new to science fiction, having previously written the screenplay for 2018’s Keen and rewrote the screenplay for 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Also executive producing are Karim Zreik, EA’s Michael Gamble and Ari Arad, who has produced everything from unknown film and last year’s terrible adaptation of Borderlands, the Spider-Verse series and Nintendo’s Upcoming Zelda Movie.

Beyond that, details about Amazon’s Mass Effect adaptation are limited, but we do know that avid gamer and former Witcher Henry Cavill once expressed interest in the project. Back in February 2021, Cavill was filmed next to the script obviously related to Mass Effect; then, in December of the same year, shortly after it became known that Amazon was close to a deal, Cavill accidentally disclosed he “would like to talk” about it. However, now with Cavill Amazon Warhammer Adaptation ConfirmedSomething has probably changed.

One person, probably No Former Bioware lead writer David Gaider is excited about the Mass Effect series. previously said the idea of BioWare television adaptations made him “cringe”.

“First of all, Mass Effect and Dragon Age had their own main character,” he explained. “This means that said TV show will have to choose whether said main character will be male or female. Boom, right from the start you’ve just alienated a whole bunch of built-in fans who had their hopes up… Secondly, these Protagonists are meant to be a blank slate for the player to fill in with their decisions. This won’t work for a passive environment. So suddenly the main character has his own personality… and his own. story. It will be strange.”

“The stories of both Mass Effect and Dragon Age were serviceable at best,” he continued. “These stories had to take into account the player’s freedom of action. They were a kind of shell on which the player’s emotional involvement was expressed – usually through companions and the choices themselves. Choice increased engagement. The star was the interactivity, not the story.”

“Take all that away, lose most of the companions, and you’ve potentially got… a pretty run-of-the-mill fantasy or sci-fi show in which perhaps most of the built-in audience was turned into outraged, howling malcontents before the film was even released.”

Amazon, of course, has already dealt with similar problems this year. Fall out A television adaptation that was eventually released in significant recognition And commercial success. So time will tell whether Geider’s fears will come true.
