Wisdom can appear on your face at any age – starting at age 30 and becoming more noticeable over time. While this is completely normal, some people prefer to look younger. But as we know, aging is part of the evolution of aging, which can come with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is an inevitable part of this process.

So how can you reduce fine lines and wrinkles to promote aging? First, we must correctly identify the difference between them. Read below to find out more.

What are fine lines?

As an esthetician, I know that most people have a hard time telling the difference between fine lines and wrinkles because they are so often related to each other, and one is almost always synonymous with the other. “Fine lines are shallow and may not be noticeable when the face is at rest, and have smaller folds that are closer to the surface of the skin and often disappear if the skin is slightly stretched,” says Dr. Rose Ingleton, a board-certified specialist. New York City dermatologist and skincare brand founder Rose Ingleton, MD. Their development can be explained by natural facial expressions such as squinting, laughing and frowning that appear superficially around the eyes and between the eyebrows, Ingleton adds.

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are more noticeable and deeper than fine lines. “They appear in deeper folds and usually don’t go away if the skin is slightly stretched,” says Ingleton. Like fine lines, they are more noticeable on the face near the eyes, forehead and nasolabial folds around the mouth. They are more difficult to treat than fine lines, but their appearance can be minimized through surgical or non-invasive skin care treatments such as laser, microneedling, etc. There are also two types of wrinkles:

  • Dynamic wrinkles: Only appear with certain facial expressions.
  • Static wrinkles: Those that are constantly present, regardless of your current expression.

What Causes Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

“Fine lines and wrinkles are signs of aging skin,” says Ingleton. And this is a result of the progressive loss of collagen and loss of elasticity that occurs as skin ages, she adds. Slower skin cell turnover and thinning skin may also be a factor as nutrients are delivered to the skin more slowly as we age. Damaged skin cells are repaired more slowly, the production of new skin cells slows down, and fat content begins to decrease.

What treatments and products are suitable for both cases?

“I personally recommend using a vitamin C serum throughout the day to support collagen synthesis and protect against oxidative damage,” says Ingleton. As a professional esthetician, I also recommend peptides as they can be very helpful in treating both fine lines and wrinkles, especially if you have dehydrated skin, as they provide hydration, protect the skin barrier, reduce inflammation and repair the skin. If you’re looking for faster results, in-office treatments for fine lines and wrinkles can be a big benefit for you. Treatments performed to dramatically reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles include “chemical peels, Botox and fillers.” says Ingleton.

Are there any preventive measures?

“The best thing you can do is wear sunscreen daily, starting at a young age, and avoid tanning, as sun exposure accelerates the aging of your skin,” Ingleton says. Incorporate antioxidants such as vitamin C and retinoids such as retinol or tretinoin into your skin care regimen.
