No charges have been brought against the US Park Police officer who shot and killed a 17-year-old in 2023.

US Park Police officer who fatally shot a 17-year-old No charges will be filed in 2023, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia

On Thursday, the DC USAO announced there was insufficient evidence to bring federal criminal civil rights or charges by DC police against a USPP officer for his role in the fatal shooting of Dalaneo Martin in March 2023.

The Department of Justice says the District of Columbia USAO, the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division conducted a comprehensive review of the incident and concluded that the charges were unfounded.

The teenager was killed on the morning of March 18 last year when US Park Police officers responded to a call from DC police for assistance with a suspicious vehicle at 34th and Baker Streets near River Terrace Park, a federal park in the US. Northeast DC

MPD and USPP officers saw the driver, later identified as Martin, sleeping in the vehicle at the scene. They determined the car had a license plate that belonged to another car and said it had a blown ignition, a sign the car may have been stolen.

One USPP officer entered the rear passenger side of the vehicle in an attempt to remove Martin from the vehicle. When the officer got into the car, Martin woke up and a fight ensued, according to investigators. He then hit the gas and drove down the street with the officer in the back seat of the car.

The officer then told Martin to stop or he would shoot, but Martin continued walking. As Martin continued driving, turning left onto Kenilworth Avenue, the officer again said, “Stop, man, just let me out! Let me out! Stop or I’ll shoot.” A few seconds later, five shots were fired.

After Martin was struck, the car continued down 36th Street, went off the road, crossed the sidewalk and up an embankment before crashing into a home on the south side of 36th Street NE.

CCTV video of the entire incident released back in April 2023. The footage showed officers attempting to resuscitate Martin, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A gun was later found in the SUV, but it is unclear whether it belonged to Martin. Police also have not said whether the car was actually stolen or who it belonged to.

“After a careful, thorough and independent review of the evidence, federal prosecutors did not find sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the United States Park Police officer was criminally responsible for the death of Mr. Martin,” DC USAO said Thursday. press release.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office remains committed to investigating allegations of excessive force by law enforcement officers and will continue to devote the resources necessary to ensure that all allegations of serious civil rights violations are fully and fully investigated,” he continued.

Speaking from his funeral back in April 2023, Martin’s family said the officer who shot the 17-year-old should be arrested.

“This pain hurts a lot. I just want justice for my son,” said Dalaneo’s mother, Terra Martin. told FOX 5 back in 2023. “I need the officers to (lock up) everyone who played a role. He got into that car because he had another motive for my son.”
