‘It’s the campaign’s responsibility’: Cleaning up signs after Election Day | Berks Regional News

READING, PA. Like Election Day itself, many signs of the campaign have long since disappeared.

“Responsibility for removing them lies with the campaigns that now put them up. Municipalities will force their teams to remove them. PennDOT will have their crews remove them as soon as they can, but that’s not their primary concern,” the Berks County Executive said. Operations Officer Kevin Barnhardt.

Barnhardt says he hopes the stragglers will finish their cases in the coming days.

“Well, of course, we are very pleased with the collection so far. The weather was beautiful. Crews were removing signs. If the signs remain, the weather is still fine. Go out and clean up the mess,” he said. said.

According to PennDOT, campaign signs are temporary and must be removed immediately after the election.

Throughout Berks County, campaigns seem to have cleared them out for the most part.

One campaign officials 69 News spoke with said they put up fewer signs this year.

Could this signal a shift?

“Maybe so. Trends are moving in a different direction. You have early voting by mail. People are literally starting to vote literally weeks earlier than usual,” Barnhardt explained.

With so many text and social media ads targeting political advertising this year, does that cut into the budget for old-fashioned signs and mailers?

“The signs are actually reminders. The signs don’t vote, but they are a reminder. I don’t think they’ll ever go away, but maybe this isn’t their explosion,” he added. “They’re also expensive.”
