Landlord closes trendy new Toronto restaurant after just 4 months

The acclaimed Toronto location of the popular Vancouver-based restaurant chain has already closed its doors despite only opening last summer.

Supported by Freehouse Teamteam behind Belfast Love, Death and taxes, Pub “Walrus” and many other restaurants and bars in Toronto and Vancouver, Sing Sing Adelaide seemed too big to fail.

This is the first Toronto location of the chain, founded in Vancouver back in 2019. The restaurant and brasserie has secured a prime spot in the Financial District, occupying some prime real estate on the ground floor of First Canadian Place.

Sing Sing Restaurant offers an eclectic menu to satisfy even the most discerning financial palates. After work you can find a variety of snacks: from photo to pizza, from beef carpaccio to grilled salmon.

Since the restaurant’s grand opening in June, Sing Sing and its fans have scored another victory; It quickly became known that another location for the chain was being built in Toronto, this time occupying the Danforth location, taking up the space left behind Atlantis, Greek cuisine.

However, on November 6, just months after opening, the restaurant closed permanently after a notice to terminate the lease appeared in the Adelaide West restaurant’s window from the building’s landlord.

According to the notice, the restaurant’s owner evicted him after failing to pay rent, ending Sing Sings’ short and sweet history in the Financial District.

However, this closure isn’t much of a surprise when you dig deeper – it comes on the heels of Freehouse Collective, then called Donelly Group. creditor protection statement amid financial problems a little over a year ago.

At the time, the restaurant group owed approximately $20.6 million in unpaid taxes, rent and accounts payable, leading to a restructuring that resulted in eight bars sold out, including Death & Taxes, earlier this year.

It goes without saying, at least judging by the group’s failure to pay rent on the Sing Sing property, that Freehouse’s financial difficulties persist and that the Adelaide site is simply the latest victim.

At the time of publication, Freehouse Collective/The Donelly Group had not responded to blogTO’s request for comment on the eviction.

However, despite the breakneck speed of the closure, Paul Dawn, public relations representative for Sing Sing, confirms to blogTO that Sing Sing’s Danforth location is still a work in progress.

“Work to open Sing Sing on the Danforth is well underway and we are very excited about the opening of this new location,” he told blogTO.

While an exact opening date for the Danforth restaurant has not yet been determined, it was originally scheduled for fall 2024, so it may be sooner rather than later.

Sing Sing Danforth will be located at 526 Danforth Avenue.
