Martha Stewart’s ex-husband and current wife break silence about their marriage to Martha

Current wife Martha Stewartex-husband, Andrew Stewarthas spoken out against claims made in a new Netflix documentary about the lifestyle mogul.

Ahead MarthaIn the October 30 episode, Shyla Nelson Stewart shared a statement via Facebook signed by her and Andrew regarding the movie trailer. In the preview, Martha, 83, advised young women that if their husbands cheat on them, “he’s a piece of crap.”

Nelson Stewart prefaced her post by saying that she is not active on any other social media platforms, so Facebook would be the only place she would comment on the matter.

“As some of you know, my husband, Andrew Stewart, is a brilliant publisher, a passionate naturalist and nature photographer, and one of the most gentle, quiet, kind-hearted men I have ever known,” Nelson Stewart wrote this morning. on Oct. 12, adding that she and Andrew were “introduced as colleagues going back nearly 12 years.”

Martha and Andrew were married from 1961 to 1990 and have a daughter. Alexisborn in 1965.

“Andy and I have built a life full of beauty, meaning, productivity and purpose, filled with true love that we share as fully as we can with our beautiful blended family of 5 wonderful adult children, our 3 adorable grandchildren, our extended family . and many dear friends,” Nelson Stewart continued.

However, she admitted that Andrew did have a history before they became husband and wife.

“Before this happy chapter, Andy’s life had several dark ones, including a painful and abusive marriage to Martha (that is, Martha Stewart) that ended almost 40 years ago,” Nelson Stewart said.

“While Andy has quietly moved on with his life, it appears that Martha continues to discuss marriage publicly, including comments in a bombshell trailer for an upcoming Netflix documentary.”

She added that the man she knows couldn’t be much different from the man portrayed on screen.

“The juxtaposition of Andy’s early life with the joy-filled, purposeful and loving marriage we live in today is amazing. Every day we openly express gratitude for our love and our life together,” Nelson Stewart continued.

She concluded by wishing “everyone, including Martha herself, to experience deep and complete love and to be loved, and the peace that comes from such love.”

A representative for Martha Stewart did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Thursday, November 7.

In her documentary, the TV presenter reveals that both she and Andy had affairs during their marriage. Andy told producers he “stayed on track” until he found out she did.

Katie Tatlock, a friend of the entrepreneur, said Martha and Andy’s relationship “has always been strained.”

“Andy was extremely busy with his publishing business, and when he was around he was always stressed,” she said. “She criticized him in terms of what he would wear or how he would say something. Andy handled her business affairs. Over the years, they became more colleagues than life partners. They were in different universes, and when Martha wanted Andy to be in her universe, he didn’t want to be there. There was more and more friction between them.”

Martha added: “He treated me very badly. And in turn, I think I treated him badly.”
