Frequently Asked Questions

Which motherboards support Ryzen 9000?

AMD’s X670E, X670, B650E, and B650 motherboards support Ryzen 9000 out of the box, so you won’t need to upgrade if you already have a Ryzen 7000 system. The X670E offers PCIe 5.0 throughout, the X670 offers PCIe 5.0 for storage and graphics, and The B650 offers PCIe 5.0 for storage only. Overall, as you move from the B650 to the X670E, expect more features, more PCIe lanes, and higher prices. Next-gen X870E and X870 motherboards are also available, but they tend to offer relatively minor improvements in specs without any major new features and the same processor compatibility, so we recommend sticking with the cheaper 600 series motherboards until at least 2024 .

Which memory is best for Ryzen 9000?

As with the Ryzen 7000, the Ryzen 9000 is a DDR5-only platform, so your old DDR4 RAM won’t work here. Instead, you will need to purchase a new DDR5 kit, ranging from DDR5-4800 to DDR5-6400 and above. We recommend DDR5-6000 for the lowest latency you can find – CL30 or lower is great, but higher latencies are still acceptable.

The usual advice for buying RAM applies here. First, purchase two or four sticks to make sure you’re running in dual-channel mode, since using one stick will seriously reduce performance. Second, make sure you enable XMP or EXPO in your motherboard’s BIOS to ensure you’re getting rated speeds – you can check your current RAM speed using a free tool like CPU-Z or Windows 11 Task Manager.

Which CPU coolers support Ryzen 9000/AM5?

While most CPU coolers now support AM5 out of the box, some older models designed for AM4 that do not use the default AMD backplane may not be compatible. Therefore, it is best to look for AM5 support, which is offered by most popular brands, including Corsair, Noctua, NZXT, Thermalright, Cooler Master, Be Quiet! etc.
