Prince William says 2024 was the hardest year of his life

Prince William opens up about how this year has affected him and his family.

The British royal family has been through a lot of public health issues recently. In February, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer. The following month, Catherine, Princess of Wales revealed that she was undergoing preventive chemotherapy after a cancer diagnosis. In September, the former Kate Middleton announced on social media that she had completed treatment and was focusing on remaining “cancer-free.”

Now, for the first time, Prince William is speaking in detail about how difficult 2024 has been for his family.

During a recent four-day trip to Cape Town, South Africa, to celebrate his Earthshot Prize, the Prince of Wales was asked by reporters how he looked back on the year.

“Honestly, it was terrible,” he said, according to Sky News. “It was probably the most difficult year of my life. So trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track was really difficult.”

He continued, “But I’m so proud of my wife, I’m so proud of my dad for dealing with what they did.”

Prince William said that despite his father and wife’s positive attitude towards their health problems, it remains a difficult time for the family.

“But from a personal family point of view it was… yes, it was brutal,” he added.

Speaking to reporters, he noted that his seemingly relaxed demeanor does not reflect how he feels.

“I couldn’t be less relaxed this year,” he admitted. But he said he is trying to focus on his charitable work.

“It’s more of a case of just getting on with it and keeping going,” Prince William shared. “I like my job, I like taking care of myself and making sure I have time for my family too.”

Since confirming his cancer diagnosis earlier this year, King Charles III has continued his royal duties. Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales also recently resumed public appearances following an update on her health.

Life as you know it can change in an instant and we had to find a way to navigate the rough waters and unknown road. The path to cancer is difficult, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.”

She also said: “My focus right now is to do everything I can to avoid cancer. Although I have completed chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”
