TL;DR

  • Apple is likely to delay the release of its first MacBook Air with an OLED screen, according to supply chain sources.
  • The laptop was expected to launch in 2027, but now its launch is expected to be delayed even further.
  • Poor sales of the first OLED iPad Pro and the cost of the display are believed to be the reason for the delay.

We’ve heard rumors for years that Apple planned to introduce OLED screens to its market MacBook line. Now it looks like the company may delay the release of its cheapest MacBook with an OLED panel.

Analysts apparently expected Apple to release an OLED MacBook Pro in 2026, followed by an OLED MacBook Air in 2027. However Elek reports that the release of the latest model will likely be delayed, citing sources in the Korean supply chain.

The publication’s sources claim that the delay was predicted earlier this year and that the development schedule for the necessary parts has also been delayed.

These sources also pointed to Apple’s new iPad Pro models equipped with OLED screens as evidence that an OLED screen alone is not enough to guarantee sales growth. Some analysts have forecast that shipments of the new iPad Pros have dropped from 10 million units to six or seven million units.

The cost of OLED screens has also apparently been cited as one of the reasons for the likely delay. It is believed that only LG and Samsung can supply the necessary displays. Apple has reportedly expressed a desire to reduce display costs for Korean brands, but has been unable to reach an agreement.

Either way, it looks like those hoping for a more affordable MacBook with a great display will have to wait at least a few years. On the other hand, there has been no shortage of Windows laptops with OLED screens, such as the Samsung Galaxy Book line. HUAWEI MateBook Seriesand Lenovo device portfolio.
