School of Engineering and Applied Science professor Danae Metaxa was recently selected as Penn’s representative to the US Institute for Artificial Intelligence Security Consortium (Penn Engineering photo).

Danae MetaxaRaj and Neera Singh Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Science, was recently selected to represent Penn in US Institute for Artificial Intelligence Security Consortium.

The consortium, originally formed in February 2024, is dedicated to creating guidelines, useful measurements and safety features for those using artificial intelligence. It brings together hundreds of organizations, consumers, industry leaders and researchers to make sure AI can be used effectively and efficiently.

The consortium, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, aims to contribute to President Joe Biden’s 2023 program. Executive Order to ensure safe, reliable and trustworthy AI.

Metaxa is the author of Audit Algorithms: Understanding Algorithmic Systems from the Outside in. Nobel Prize SummitStanford University, Johns Hopkins University and others. Before coming to the University of Pennsylvania, they were postdoctoral fellows at Stanford University. Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society Program on Democracy and the Internet.

Metaxa previously taught the Algorithmic Justice course in CIS 7000 and now teaches a class on Human-Computer Interaction. Penn HCI, initiative they are co-founders whose goal is to develop technologies that will positively impact individuals and communities.

The consortium will help bring together experts and novices on this growing problem, especially since it can be a useful tool but can also have detrimental consequences for the scientific community. Metaxa’s contribution will support the consortium by engaging in collaborative and interdisciplinary research, understanding the impact of AI on society and the economy, and facilitating technology transfer among consortium members.

“I am honored to bring my expertise to the consortium and represent Penn in this collaborative effort to ensure safe and ethical AI,” Metaxa said in an announcement to Penn Engineering Today. “It is important that we have these bridges to ensure that our research turns into real results. -global impact.”
