Fresh floods in Spain washed away dozens of cars near Girona

New floods have hit the Girona region in northeastern Spain, destroying about 30 cars in the city of Cadaques, Spanish media reported.

The video was published by a local journalist showed a stream of water rushing down the street and a pile of cars blocking the bridge early Friday morning.

No casualties were reported in the latest flood to hit the country.

Last week, one of the worst floods in Europe this century killed more than 200 people, most of them in the Valencia region.

The disaster broke out intense anger against the authorities for not warning about the emergency earlier.

Flooding in Cadaques early Friday left about 30 cars trapped under a bridge, Catalonia’s fire service reported on Channel X. No one was injured or trapped, emergency officials added.

Even more dangerous weather is expected in the region overnight.

The Catalan Meteorological Service has issued a rain warning from Friday evening until Saturday afternoon in the Alt Empordà region, where Cadaques is located. The weather agency warned that rainfall could exceed 20 mm (0.7 inches) in 30 minutes.

The agency recorded 76.8 mm (3 inches) of rain in Cadaques on November 7 and 8, while two other nearby towns received more than 100 mm (4 inches).

According to the Spanish meteorological agency Aemet, from October 1 to November 5, Spain received 72% more rain than normal for this period.

Precipitation reported by experts has been exacerbated by climate change, resulted in flash flooding that left people trapped in their cars.
