PS5 Pro scalpers may be losing money on the console, but they’re still making profits from the disc drives

Unlike the original PS5 launching back in 2020, scalpers are learning the hard way that there is no shortage of new PS5 Pro – some even resell them at a loss.

Get out your tiny violins, guys; VGK reported that since the PS5 Pro doesn’t face the same supply issues as the PS5, some scalpers are actually losing money on them. As someone who struggled to get a retail PS5 before December 2021, this news brought a big smile to my face.

At least in the UK there are quite a few of them. several listings on eBay the console is being offered at a retail price of less than £699.99 as scalpers try to recoup as many losses as possible. When the PS5 first launched, supplies were limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which slowed global production of much of the hardware needed to build the console. There are no such chip shortages anymore, so scalpers seriously misjudged market conditions this time.

Unfortunately, it’s not all good news. Since the PS5 Pro is digital only, the external drive is now scalped. It retails at £99.99 but you can find eBay listings around the £180 mark – with one dreamer trying to sell one for £500.

Lance McDonald notes that for £500 you can buy a PS5 Slim, remove the disc drive, use it for the PS5 Pro and then keep the digital console. So, even if you don’t want to wait for disk drives to become available again, you have other options other than using expensive scalpers.
