Timeline of the 2024 network collapse

  • The first major blackout occurred on February 4, 2024, when grid capacity plummeted from 2,407 megawatts to just 31 megawatts by midday and reached zero soon after.

In a message published on X, Ikeja Electric apologized to its customers for the power outage and confirmed the collapse of the national grid.

The statement says:

“Public Notice Dear Customer, We would like to inform you that today, November 5, 2024, at 1:52 p.m., we experienced a system outage that affected supply across our network.

Likewise, Eko Distribution Company from Nigeria. also said:

“Dear valued customer, we would like to inform you that on November 5, 2024 at 1:52 p.m., there was a system failure that resulted in a loss of power to our network.

“We are currently working with our partners and hope to restore the network as soon as possible. We will keep you updated as soon as power is restored.”

TCN talks about the latest crash

Meanwhile, the Transport Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that the national grid collapse that occurred on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 was a partial power outage and not a complete blackout.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ndidi Mbah, general manager of public affairs at TCN, explained that the incident was caused by multiple outages of lines and generators.

Mbah said:

“The failure did not affect the entire network, saving certain areas from loss of electricity.

NERC has warned Nigerians using prepaid meters

The Commission published a message through its official account X on Tuesday, August 8, 2024, urging electricity consumers take action ahead of schedule.

The commission warned that after the deadline, customers who fail to upgrade may not be able to replenish their electricity supplies.
