I put my personal life on public display; straighten your shoulders to accept criticism: CJI D.I. Chandrachud

CJI Chandrachud in his address also spoke about his childhood and his father, former CJI Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud.

“My father was very disciplined, but he never punished us. He bought a small apartment in Pune. I asked him why? He said I know I won’t stay in it. He told me that you should keep this apartment in Pune until you retire as a judge, so that you know that if your moral integrity is compromised, you can know that you have a roof over your head.“, he recalled.

He also talked about his children attending the event.

“Words to my beautiful children Abhinav and Chintan. I keep telling them why don’t you come to Delhi and argue in the Supreme Court, at least I will see you. They told me, Dad, that we will do this after (you leave office)… Why should we disgrace your name and ours by coming here when you are a judge?”

The CJI also thanked his wife Kalpana Das and called her a “great friend”.

“When we got married in 2008, she made one promise from me – that I would not wear any jewelry except the wedding ring that she gave me. She truly is such a woman, a woman of character and strength.”
