Broad Horizons Education Trust in Norfolk is cutting positions to save £1m

Around 80 support staff positions at eight Norfolk schools are at risk as an academy trust tries to save £1 million.

Broad Horizons Education Trust, which is based in Norwich and runs 18 schools across Norfolk, said the possible job losses were equivalent to 31 full-time positions.

In a letter sent to parents and carers seen by the BBC, the trust’s chief executive Owen Jenkins said management had explored “every possible avenue” to avoid cuts.

“While we remain committed to our vision of supporting every child to realize their potential, we have no choice but to reduce operating costs, a significant portion of which is staff costs,” he said.

The letter to parents goes on to say: “We do not take this decision lightly as we fully understand the impact this has on our staff, your children and our school community.”

The fund said the decision to cut positions was a necessary step to ensure its “long-term financial health and sustainability.”

“Despite these challenges, our commitment to providing the best education for your children remains unwavering,” Mr Jenkins said.

The trust said it needed to find savings of around £1 million in the next financial year.

It will now hold formal consultations within 30 days with staff at eight of its schools.

“There is no easy way to achieve the savings needed and trustees recognize this is an anxious time for staff, parents and students,” Mr Jenkins said.

“Out of respect for our staff and the process we are undertaking while consultation continues, I cannot comment further on this or any individual aspects of our savings program.”
