Somewhere in Arlington, within the walls of a public house run by the punk activist group Positive Force, a “Tsunami” formed. Almost 35 years later, the indie rock band is back: on November 8th they will release Loud asa five-LP collection featuring all of the band’s singles, a series of demos released in 1991, and remasters of three of the four albums. The band also announced their first tour in over two decades.

Frontwoman Jenny Toomey and Christine Thomson were roommates in Positive Force. The couple, who had already founded the record label Simple Machines, founded Tsunami at the end of 1990. Maintaining a DIY spirit, the band created a sound unique to DC indie rock music: slower but still upbeat, with intricate melodies borrowed from the emerging Riot Grrrl genre of math rock and a touch of tweed.

During their seven-year heyday, Tsunami released four albums and dozens of singles. They toured the US and UK, performed at festivals and played alongside local artists and big names such as Elliott Smith and Alice in Chains. The group disbanded around 1998, but never truly broke up, returning for periodic concerts throughout the 2000s. Last year Tsunami signed a contract with Numero Groupa record company that re-releases music.

The band has booked several stand-alone dates in 2023 through Numero. In September, Tsunami announced the release Loud as it is which also includes an accompanying book of essays and photographs from the ’90s.

They will be touring with the band next year. Idaa frequent collaborator with whom Toomey and Thomson worked at Simple Machines. The bands will tour the country in March 2025. On March 27, they will stop in their hometown at Black Cat.
