Ohio man who fatally shot brother and neighbor found insane

The Columbus Man Who fatally stabbed his brother and neighborand was found not guilty by reason of insanity by the judge and was committed to a mental hospital.

In July, Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Chris Brown found Christopher Campos Hernandez, 31, of the Far West Side, not guilty of aggravated murder and other charges. April 3, 2023, knife deaths his brother, 25-year-old Jesus Campos Hernandez, and his neighbor, 24-year-old Jacob Stratton.

On Wednesday, Brown ordered Campos Hernandez to be housed at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare’s civilian unit as the “least restrictive alternative available consistent with public safety and treatment goals,” court records said.

On the afternoon of April 3, 2024, Columbus police received a call about a man who had broken into a townhouse in the 5700 block of Belmore Drive and assaulted people inside. Officers arrived on scene to find Stratton fatally shot and a woman with serious injuries.

During the investigation, detectives found Campos Hernandez Jr. dead in a nearby townhouse.

Court records say Campos Hernandez Sr. stabbed his brother before breaking into a townhouse near where he lived.

Through his lawyer, Campos Hernandez pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. During a July court hearing, Brown found he was not guilty by reason of insanity under Ohio law.

Ohio law states that Campos Hernandez will remain under the jurisdiction of the court, meaning he cannot be released from treatment without a judge’s approval as long as he is deemed to be mentally ill (as determined by the judge based on a psychiatric evaluation) or he could face a maximum possible sentence of life in prison. The law states that the situation that comes first determines what happens.

As part of his treatment and commitment, Campos Hernandez will not be allowed unsupervised movement on hospital grounds, will not be allowed any movement, including under supervision, outside the hospital, and will be held at the hospital in “protective status,” court records state.

Brown will receive regular updates on the status of Campos Hernandez’s treatment based on schedule established by Ohio law.
