Utah man rescued after falling 50 feet into abandoned mine

Iron County, Utah. Iron County Search and Rescue officials had to respond earlier this week to help rescue a 49-year-old man who fell into an abandoned mine shaft.

Officials said they received a call for help regarding a victim around 4 p.m. Tuesday. The man, who has not been named, fell about 50 feet into an abandoned mine in rural Iron County.

The helicopters were sent by Life Flight, SUU Aviation and Mercy Air. Life Flight was the first to arrive on scene and make contact with the patient. Once a representative from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office arrives, a Life Flight helicopter will depart to deliver the Iron County Ropes Team members and their equipment.

Arriving at the scene, a team of rope workers descended into the mine and found the victim, who, according to rescuers, suffered a serious head injury. The victim was then placed in a stretcher, which was like a basket on which victims could be lifted.

After exiting the mine, the victim was taken to the hospital.
