Additional funds allocated for traffic study in Summerville

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) – Half a million dollars will go toward a study to find ways to reduce congestion on North Main Street from Highway 78 over I-26 in Summerville.

The project is in the early preliminary design stages and is part of a regional transportation improvement plan.

Traffic signal upgrades, turn lanes and intersection improvements are just some of the things being explored to help ease traffic flow.

They are considering connecting the north side of Berlin’s Myers Boulevard to I-26 without affecting Main Street.

Summerville Mayor Russ Touchberry says the study is desperately needed.

“What we don’t want is for our business to be negatively impacted by this traffic jam, and this research is extremely important to help our people move in and through our city, and to ensure our businesses can remain active and open in this corridor.” Touchberry said.

The City is working with Berkeley County, SCDOT and the Government Council to resolve these issues.

It is unknown how long the study will take.

Once completed, officials will be provided with recommendations on changes that can be implemented and plans will be developed based on this.
