Habitat for Humanity will renovate veterans’ home ahead of Veterans Day

Tampa, Florida. Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County is giving back to those who have given so much to our country.

They said there’s no place like home, but sometimes home needs a little sprucing up.

“I was blown away when I saw all these people here. Almost tears started flowing because I was happy,” said Kenneth Lyles.

Past storms have left Lyles’ home in very poor condition. His roof, patched with tarpaulin, began to leak, and a recent stroke left him unable to handle it all on his own.

“I was depressed and everything because of what was going on, and because of the stroke I couldn’t do it myself. It just kept bothering me,” Lyles said.

A team of volunteers came to his Tampa home and replaced his roof. That’s not all. The Air Force veteran will also receive a fresh coat of paint and landscaping.

It’s all part of Habitat for Humanity’s week of service to veterans.

“Veterans tend to be the most in need of help and the least likely to ask for it, and when you bring other veterans, it also builds camaraderie,” said Nitza Rivera, vice president of Veterans Build for Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County.

Lyles is beyond grateful. “Oh man, I feel great. I appreciate it. I am very grateful to them,” he said.
