Stuart Lowe sacked as USA Cricket coach

Ian Omoro

Just months after his appointment, USA Cricket announced in April that Stuart Lowe would step down as head coach of the men’s team. The announcement came a day before the USA’s match against Nepal in Dallas, where they are currently competing in League Two of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The dismissal comes despite the US men’s team’s historic triumph over Pakistan at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in Texas, as well as other historic achievements under the Act. After World Cup wins over Canada and Pakistan and a draw with Ireland in a loss in Florida, the USA reached the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup. This achievement, crucially, guaranteed USA Cricket a place in the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup.

With six wins and three losses, Lowe also led the US men’s ODI team to second place out of eight in the current cycle of the Cricket World Cup League Two ODI table. The Americans are now four points behind Canada, which has played three more games than them. Before Lowe signed a three-year deal with USA Cricket in late spring, the USA had 16 wins, 17 losses, two draws and one draw in the 2022 CWCL2 cycle, placing them sixth out of seven.

“Given Stewart’s contributions to the program, this was not an easy decision to make. Unfortunately, we felt that changes were necessary for the next phase of competitive preparation,” USA Cricket CEO Jonathan Atkason said in a press release.

USA Cricket has not yet provided an explanation for Law’s dismissal. They have struggled to maintain leadership both on and off the field since being recognized as an associate member by the ICC in 2019 following the dissolution of the failed USA Cricket Association in 2017. Since Ian’s time, there have been three different head coaches and four general managers in the United States. Higgins retired in December 2021.
