Make a plan to celebrate Día de los Muertos events in Ventura County.

Ventura County’s Día de los Muertos celebrations this weekend will feature everything from folk dancing to mariachi, crafts and a car show.

The Mexican holiday, known in English as “Day of the Dead,” celebrates the return of the souls of deceased loved ones for a brief reunion with their families. It is marked by the creation Ofrendas or altars honoring family and friends with photographs and other memorabilia.

Here is a list of upcoming events. Admission is free unless otherwise stated.

Día de los Muertos events in Ventura County

Camarillo

The altars will be on display from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday through Sunday, in Exhibition Room 1320 at CSU Channel Islands Broome Library, 1 University Drive. For more information see cscuci.edu/events and click “November”.

Fillmore

Altars, music, food and children’s activities will be part of the Día de los Muertos festival from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Central Park, 250 Central Ave. To find out more, visit the city Instagram post.

Moorpark

The Moorpark College Choirs will perform “Día de los Muertos X Brahms Requiem” at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday at the college’s performing arts center, 7075 Campus Road. The vocal ensemble will perform excerpts from Mexican composers. The concert choir will perform Brahms’ “German Requiem”. Tickets are $5 for the 11 a.m. show and $12 to $16 for the 7 p.m. show. Newbury Park

Festival de los Muertos will feature live music, crafts and food from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Borchard Community Center, 190 N. Reino Road. For more information visit crpd.org/events/festival-de-los-muertos.

Día de los Muertos crafts and activities will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Newbury Park Library meeting room, 2331 Borchard Road. The program includes a 90-minute lesson on creating miniature magnetic altars at 2:30 p.m. Cm. tolibrary.org for details.

Oxnard

The Día de los Muertos community altar will be on display through Saturday at The Collection at RiverPark, 600 Town Center Drive. The altar is located between the Cheesecake Factory and Larsen’s Grill. For more information see thecollectionrp.com/portfolio/dia-de-los-muertos/.

The Día de los Muertos celebration will feature musicians, dancers, poets, speakers, altars, crafts and cuisine from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, 800 Hobson Way. Visit theopac.org/dia-de-los-muertos for more information.

Santa Paula

Aztec and folk dancers will perform during the wake from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Pierce Brothers Cemetery in Santa Paula, 380 Cemetery Road. There will also be face painting, sugar skull decorating, crafts and vendors. Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Afterwards, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church will bless the graves. Those who attend the event, which is co-hosted by the cemetery and the Santa Paula Museum of Art, can have a photo of their loved one displayed on a public altar or build their own altar at the grave of a family member or friend. Families will learn to make candles, clay skulls and more during Día los de Muertos events from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Paula Museum of Art’s Cole Center for the Arts, 123 N. 10th St. Visitors can also view Día de los Muertos exhibits featuring works of art by Chaya Cusik, John Talewicz and Alek Talewicz. Thousand Oaks

The California Lutheran University Latino Student Organization celebrates Día de los Muertos from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the university’s Student Union Cultural Engagement and Inclusion Center, 60 W. Olsen Road. There will be music, face painting, a piñata and an altar for photos of loved ones. Additionally, social justice altars are on display in the student union until November 5th. Mexicano-Jarabe will perform a Día de los Muertos concert on Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Janet and Ray Sherr Forum Theater at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. Tickets are $36.75. bapacthousandoaks.com.

Ventura

Día de los Muertos Downtown Ventura will feature a car show, music on three stages, a street market, open buffets and more on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on three blocks of Main Street. The event is hosted by Limón y Sal and the Downtown Ventura Social Club. See event announcement for details. Instagram post.

The dancers will perform during the Día de los Muertos celebration from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Bell Arts, 432 N. Ventura Ave. The event will feature altars, costumes and more. For more information visit bellartsfactory.org/events.
