Banner Elk resident Jerry Hicks received $1 million prize from an Extreme Cash scratch ticket, opting Friday to receive it as a lump sum payout of $600,000 – before taxes – the North Carolina Education Lottery said. His after-tax winnings were $429,007.

Hicks said he “found $20 in a race track parking lot” in Boone on Tuesday and “used it to buy a ticket” that won him a prize. according to the lottery.

“They didn’t actually have the ticket I was looking for, so I bought it,” Hicks said.

The largest prize offered by the Extreme Cash lottery, which costs $25 per ticket, is $1 million. The odds of winning $1 million in the game as of Monday were 1 in 2,017,650, according to the lottery.

Hicks’ post-victory plans included a stop at local restaurant Golden Corral.
