41 birds rescued from Henderson home in unsafe conditions

HENDERSON, Ky. (WENT) – Forty-one birds were rescued from a Henderson man’s home this week.

Since 2014, Stacey McCord-Crooks says she has been trying to explain to the man why the birds were not being cared for properly.

Crooks is president of the Henderson County Humane Society and Henderson County Animal Control.

Now, 10 years later, someone called and told the man about the birds.

Both Henderson County Animal Control and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the removal of the birds.

Bird species discovered include various species of parrots, 8 black-capped conures, 5 lovebirds and 17 cockatiels.

The humane society says the person responsible kept tropical birds out in 90-degree weather during the winter.

Crooks says the man was also smoking in the house, which she said could kill the bird.

41 birds were sent to a shelter in another state.

“They can be very cute, but they are very loud,” Crooks says. “They are dirty and having 41 birds would be a burden for anyone, even a rescue, and they have more than that, but when you are physically or financially unable to take care of them, then you find yourself in a situation like this gentleman was, and is there are many things that can kill them.

The Humane Society says these situations can happen because these birds are being taken from their home countries.

The organization also urges potential owners to do thorough research before considering purchasing an exotic bird rather than purchasing one from a breeder.
