Greenville Soup Kitchen offers showers for homeless people

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – An East Carolina eatery is taking another step forward to help the community.

Joy Community Center and Soup Kitchen in Greenville is helping the homeless community by offering showers.

Today is the first day of this service. Over the past couple of weeks, work has been carried out to restore the old shower room in the 90s building.

Center officials say people can sign up on Mondays and showers will be available by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“You see people as just another person,” said Tom Quigley of the Joy Community Center and Soup Kitchen. “They are not a number or a race. It’s just one person helping another person. This woman is about to leave here smelling like coconut. Today she gained a little dignity by going outside.”

In the future, Quigley said he hopes to add more showers so they can reach more people in the community.
