League Cup quarter-final draw details: two ties resolved, six still to be played

League Cup quarter-final draw details: two ties resolved, six still to be played

Details of the League Cup quarter-final draw are below.

This will happen after the end of today’s match between Tottenham and Manchester City.

That game kicks off at 8.15pm on Wednesday, half an hour later than Newcastle v Chelsea at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s match on Wednesday night will go straight to penalties, if the score is level after 90 minutes there will be no extra time. For those not at St James’ Park, kick-off on Wednesday 30 October at 7.45pm will be shown on Sky Sports+.

Two of the last eight League Cup matches were decided on Tuesday night.

Southampton led 2-0 before champions Stoke equalized. An 88th-minute winner saved Saints from a penalty shootout.

By the way, Brentford took the lead but second-tier Sheffield Wednesday equalized in the second half last night. The Premier League team needs a 5-4 penalty shootout win to advance.

For all Newcastle United fans looking for positive signs…

When United reached Wembley in the League Cup two years ago, United won the first two rounds by one goal against League Two side Tranmere and beat Premier League rivals Palace. in the penalty shootout. Before defeating three more Premier League teams (Bournemouth, Leicester and Southampton) to reach Wembley.

This season, although they did it in a different order, Eddie Howe’s side had a one-goal lead against a League Two team (AFC Wimbledon) and defeated Premier League rivals Forest in a penalty shoot-out.

To repeat the visit to Wembley in 2023, Newcastle United will almost certainly have to repeat the feat, defeating three other Premier League clubs, Chelsea and two more. After yesterday’s defeats to Sheff Ueda and Stoke, Preston are the only non-Premier League team remaining in the Carabao Cup. With Arsenal huge favorites in this match, if United can beat Chelsea they will almost certainly find seven other Premier League clubs in the quarter-finals.

A win over Chelsea followed by a home draw against Southampton or Brentford to secure a chance of a two-legged semi-final sounds like the perfect Wednesday night for Newcastle United. That’s what I hope.
