NPO warns KZN shelters of funding crisis

South Africa’s National Shelter Movement says 16 safe spaces providing care for women and children could be forced to close their doors due to insufficient funding.

KZN Movement spokesperson Nadia Mansamy says limited funds make it difficult to care for victims.

“It is currently R70.35 per woman or child, and a quick analysis shows that from 2012 to 2024 there was an increase of only R11.35 per client or child, and no exorbitant inflation was taken into account.” .

Mansamy says each shelter can accommodate up to 35 people, and the money raised goes toward food, rent, maintenance and transportation.

She says they also pay for certificates and identification cards because in some cases, attackers tear or burn them.

“GBV in South Africa is at its highest level and President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared it a pandemic and women and children need a safe place every day.

“What will be their fate without functioning shelters?”

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will present his medium-term fiscal policy statement in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon.

Economist Bonke Dumisa says the focus should be on future growth targets

“Last year, government employee spending rose more than 7.5 percent and economic growth was 0.6 percent, which is unsustainable. We hope the government will not lose the stamina to resist high wage increases.”
