Taylor Swift mania, one of the last stops on the Eras tour, has infected my city and I just can’t shake it.

It seems like it’s been going on forever, but it’s finally time to end the Eras Tour. Although the Internet is littered with theories about orange door meaning and what does it all mean, I can only focus on one thing: Taylor Swift is coming to my city of Indianapolis and I’m tired of being told I should appreciate it.

Taylor Swift is an icon, and the city is going out of its way to show that it’s an honor to be chosen as one of the final stops on her iconic tour. However, I have seen fewer red carpets rolled out for multiple presidents than for this event. Not that I’m overly patriotic or anything, but there’s a strange energy about her arrival that I find very unpleasant. The city and Swifties keep telling me to appreciate this moment and enjoy it, and honestly, I’m really tired of hearing it. As someone who is only vaguely familiar with her music, I can pun enough to say that I’m having a hard time shaking off her arrival and feel like I’m being raised in an orphanage where I can’t last another hour for the next reasons.

The amount of tributes to Taylor Swift in the city is bordering on insane.

If you were visiting Indianapolis right now, it would be impossible not to notice that Taylor Swift’s arrival in town is imminent. This is thanks in no small part to the 330-foot image of her on display at the JW Marriott Hotel downtown, which is simply mind-blowing. That alone would be enough to say, “Wow, maybe they overdid it,” but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s just a rundown of some of Swift’s wild memories in Indianapolis.

On top of that, Beech Grove, a city in the Indianapolis metropolitan area, renamed itself Beech Grove (Taylor’s Version). Fun fact: the city recently made a cameo appearance in trailer for Will and Harperas they were seen hanging out in the parking lot of the local Wal-Mart. It’s a lot, and while Swifties everywhere can enjoy every minute of it, I can’t help but feel like I’m being forced into it.

The vast majority of visitors to the terminus will be from outside Indianapolis

Obviously I’m not one to look forward to Taylor Swift’s upcoming projectsbut I’m not categorically against it. My daughter and niece love her music and while it’s not my jam, I appreciate the idea that people who were fans in the area will get the opportunity to see the world’s greatest artist and have memories to look back on.

Then I heard from a local Indianapolis reporter Eric Graves that over 89% of ticket buyers were from outside the city, so the vast majority of Swifties here won’t even be able to see her on any of the three nights she performs at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indianapolis business owners and officials are salivating over the income of the roughly 200,000 people who come to spend money, and that’s true. This event brings attention to the city and will hopefully convince others that it is worthy of future mega-events.

At the same time, it is sad to see that an event so important to the fandom is effectively closed to the local population. It’s more like highly profitable concert it just happens in Indianapolis and is not for the people of the city at all.

Through no fault of Taylor Swift, this whole thing makes me anti-Taylor Swift

This entire experience should be the same as during the holiday season unless you personally celebrate Christmas. Even if you’re not interested in it, you can’t escape it no matter where you go. Earlier this month I rolled my eyes at Bill Belichick, who was I moan when I see Taylor Swift on television. Now, at the end of this month, I understand it.

Taylor Swift didn’t force me to listen to her music or buy her merchandise, but since she has such a huge and loyal fandom and is a cash cow for companies, it can sometimes feel that way. There’s no logical reason why I should know that Swifties We are waiting for the reputation announcement on this tour because I don’t even really understand what that means. But since she’s mentioned in every local media I read, it’s inevitable.

I’m truly someone who best lives by the philosophy of allowing others to live and not just hate something for the sake of it, but everyone has a breaking point. While it’s a celebration for many, I can’t help but think that my perception of Taylor Swift and her legacy was irreparably altered by The Eras Tour’s stop in Indianapolis, through no fault of hers.

The rejection of the hype and consumerism surrounding the city since T-Swift’s arrival essentially makes me feel like a grumpy old man. I agree, I’m not so bitter, I’ll start digging into the video of her talking about P Diddy. I, like many others, should be excited about the upcoming big weekend, but instead I silently assume that the city center will be a mess and just wait for it all to be over. I’m not sorry, no, no.
