Portion of Talbot Park set to be acquired by Bangor YMCA

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – The Bangor City Council has unanimously approved an order that would authorize the City Manager to release a three acre portion of Talbot Park to the Bangor YMCA.

The Bangor YMCA has acquired a number of properties that share a boundary with Talbot Park on Main Street, Davis Court, and First Street.

It’s part of their plan to build a new YMCA in that area.

As part of the permit conditions, the Bangor YMCA will only use the portion of the park as green and open space for youth sports and recreation, together with parking areas, driveways and pathways, fencing and lighting.

The YMCA will continue to use the space to recognize Bangor native Gerald Talbot who was the first African American elected to the Maine legislature.

It will also be available to the public outside of the Bangor YMCA’s business hours.

The city will retain one acre of the park to maintain the playground there.
