BIRMINGHAM, Alabama ((VBRK) – Brookwood Baptist Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is doing everything it can to lift the spirits of families this fall.

This week they dressed up and created Halloween costumes for dozens of newborns. It’s an annual tradition that always brings a smile to the faces of families who sometimes spend weeks in the NICU.

“It was fun. I didn’t expect that because of course, I mean, no mom is going to spend the holidays in the NICU, so this makes it a lot cozier. It becomes your home away from home when you spend so many days and nights here just looking after your baby,” said mom Emily Gomez.

Many employees are looking forward to this. The team tries to tailor costumes for patients based on their family or personality. This year, staff dressed newborn Gomez as Frida Kahlo to celebrate her Latino heritage.

“Seeing them participate and have fun with it is a lot of fun. It’s great to see all the costumes and how much work they put into them. You can tell they really care and are loved here,” Gomez said.
