Former Red Sox shortstop Dylan Covey became the first MLB free agent to sign.

NEW YORK — The Mets made their first move of the offseason, agreeing Thursday to a one-year contract with 33-year-old right-hander Dylan Covey.

He earns a salary of $850,000 in the major leagues and $350,000 in the minor leagues.

Covey went 0-2 with a 2.66 ERA, 19 strikeouts and nine walks over 20⅓ innings in 18 games this year with Triple-A Lehigh Valley Philadelphia, Double-A Reading and Class A Clearwater farm teams.

His sinker averaged 93.8 mph at Triple A, where he threw 45 percent of sinkers, 24 percent of cutters, 18 percent of splitters and 13 percent of sliders.

Covey last pitched in the major leagues with Philadelphia in 2023, going 1-3 with a 3.69 ERA in one start and 27 relief appearances.

He made eight appearances for the Red Sox in 2020, posting a 7.07 ERA over 14 innings, striking out 11 with two walks. He pitched for Rakuten in Taiwan in 2021-22 before returning to the majors with the Dodgers through 2023.

On March 25, he was placed on the injured list with a sprained right shoulder, and on July 28, he began minor league rehab in Clearwater. On August 27, Covey was activated from Illinois and immediately assigned to the Lehigh Valley that same day. .

He elected free agency on Oct. 10, which is his right as a player who was not reinstated to the 40-man roster and would have been eligible for salary arbitration had he been on the roster.

Covey is 7–32 with a 6.18 ERA in 46 starts and 54 relief appearances over five major league seasons with the White Sox (2017–19), Red Sox (2020), Dodgers (2023) ) and Phillies (2023), striking out 214 and walking 133 in 307⅓ innings.

Covey has 60 strikeouts and 33 walks in 89⅓ innings as a pitcher, going 2-5 with a 4.33 ERA.
