These include eco-friendly features and excellent connectivity to properties such as 2 Rio Office Park and 2Rio Residence at IOI Rio, as well as a range of public engagement and awareness events such as the City Nature Challenge (“CNC”) 2024, CNC Kids Nature. The Walk, Night Walk in the City Park, Earth Hour and From Waste to Treasure campaigns.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, IIOIPG is building the future by protecting the interests of future generations. “We also promote a greater understanding and appreciation of nature and sustainability through fun and interactive on-site activities, encouraging the community to get involved in preserving the environment and benefiting from nature-based solutions together. These sessions received strong public support and attracted a wide range of participants,” he added.

The latest IIOPG program in Puchong, Nature Observation Night, was held at Bandar Puteri City Park on 7 September 2024 as part of its third iteration in collaboration with the Society of Wildlife of Malaysia (“SOWM”). The event drew more than 100 participants to the city park to observe its flora and fauna, citing Nature Exploration’s Wildlife Passport, a conservation guide by SOWM President Calvin So.

Transforming Puchong into a well-connected, pedestrian-friendly city.

Named after the striped heron that lives along the banks of rivers and ponds, Puchong began as a rubber estate and tin mining village served by a two-lane road. The city is now a vibrant constituency with a growing confluence of major routes including the Damansara-Puchong Expressway, Bukit Jalil Highway and Shah Alam-Puchong Highway, and a population of over 375,000, including 32,000 in Bandar Puteri alone -Puchong.

IIOPG has invested heavily in Puchong since it ventured into the area with Bandar Puchong Jaya (1990) and Bandar Puteri Puchong (2000). This included the widening of the main road (Jalan Puchong) to six lanes, the construction of Puchong’s first shopping mall (IOI Mall) and the construction of SJK(C) Harcroft – now SJK(C) Shin Cheng. Road connectivity to the Bandar Puteri Puchong and Rio City interchanges has also been improved, and covered walkways and bridges have been built to improve pedestrian access to Taman Perindustrian Puchong LRT Station, Stellar Suites, Puchong Financial Corporate Centre, IOI Rio and The Commercial Hub Cube. These links serve to reduce traffic congestion and associated carbon emissions in line with IIOIPG’s commitment to the Low Carbon Cities Framework (“LCCF”).

Sustainability during the construction and operation phases of IOI Rio

Along the way, IIOPG has organized its launches in Bandar Puteri Puchong and Bandar Puchong Jaya with sustainability in mind throughout all phases of construction and operation. This included the use of system formwork in 98% of 2Rio Residence construction projects, reducing material waste. In addition, 20% of the aluminum formwork, as well as the workers’ living quarters, were reused from previous projects.

“Other sustainability initiatives include the use of jack-up platform systems at IOI Rio. They increase speed and safety, as well as quality control of exterior finishing. During the operations phase, we ensure energy efficiency and invest in renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions through solar-powered CCTV systems with synchronized lighting for common areas and motion-activated escalators, as well as abundant landscaping that provides shade and reducing urban space. Heat island effects,” Chung said.

“On the roof of 2 Rio Park, our solar panels operate at a peak output of 214 kW, producing 824 GJ of renewable energy per year and avoiding 13.7.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions. At the same time, we encourage alternative modes of transport with four installed electric vehicle charging stations, four bicycle hubs and ample cycle paths in and around the development. In addition, the public transit (DRT) stop next to IOI Rio facilitates last-mile connectivity to Puchong’s extensive light rail transit (LRT) network,” he added.

Complementing residential and commercial components, IOI Rio’s Bandar Puteri City Park is a signature 10-acre urban park developed by IIOIPG with recreational amenities such as an 80-meter boardwalk, suspension bridges, nature trail, secret garden, public spaces under a canopy, solar panels. -electric lighting and much more. It is home to over 89 species of flora and 135 species of fauna, making it a popular destination for nature watching.

Fun, interactive, community-engaged activities to promote greener lifestyles

Among its public engagement programs, IIOIPG has been collaborating with SOWM since 2018 to conduct nature observation activities, encouraging the community and public to observe and document species of flora and fauna. This includes observations at Bandar Puteri City Park, highlighting its natural beauty and deepening the community’s understanding of the city’s biodiversity.

IIOPG remains committed to preserving urban diversity in all its projects. Since 2019, the Group has been organizing the City Nature Challenge to support global biodiversity conservation initiatives. As a result, 1,350 participants have contributed to citizen science in and around IIOPG towns and developments, recording a total of 12,440 observations and 3,549 species to date.

As part of the City Nature Challenge, a Children’s Nature Walk was organized on 27 April 2024 in collaboration with Sekitar Kita, Club IOI and IOI Kids Club. During the nature walk, participants took a sightseeing tour of Bandar Puteri City Park, where children and parents learned about the city’s biodiversity and recorded observations of flora and fauna species in appropriate nature journals.

“Through these initiatives we are increasing understanding and awareness of biodiversity and its importance in our community. We complemented these efforts with Earth Hour 2024 celebrations by hosting a Night Walk on March 23, 2024, in collaboration with SOWM. The overnight nature event saw around 100 participants come together to observe biodiversity and practice plogging in Bandar Puteri City Park. During Earth Hour, participants worked together to turn off the lights and light candles in a city park to raise awareness and inspire conversations about climate change and mitigation,” Chang said.

Concluding its sustainability efforts, IIOIPG launched this year’s Waste to Treasure campaign from March 23 to May 26, 2024. Launched in 2019, the Waste to Treasure campaign allowed the group to invite the IIOPG community in and around them to participate in the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle movement. by collecting and diverting waste from landfills in accordance with the Group’s Sustainability Policy and Waste Management Policy. A total of 2,021.1 kg of materials were diverted, including 93.3 kg of used cooking oil and 79 pieces of e-waste, with 437.0 kg, 7.70 kg and 28 pieces diverted respectively in Puchong alone.

IIOPG’s sustainability efforts in Puchong are in line with the Group’s comprehensive Sustainability Policy, which aims to enhance the Group’s economic, environmental, social and governance (“EESG”) performance. IIOIPG’s first Sustainability Roadmap further outlines strategies to create sustainable value for all and preserve the environment for vibrant, prosperous communities. These strategies also aim to reduce risks and seize opportunities, while driving growth of the Group’s business.
