Tyler, the Creator performed in front of 1,400 fans at a surprise show in Boston.

Tyler’s loyal fans, The Creator, had the surprise opportunity to see the rapper perform in Boston yesterday. After he published Instagram story by announcing a $5 concert at Converse Lovejoy Wharf, lucky fans were able to purchase tickets and attend the show.

The rapper, born Tyler Okonma, performed a short set called “30 Minutes of Chromakopia” on Thursday afternoon to celebrate his latest album, “Chromakopia”, which was released on Monday.

Although Okonma has previously collaborated with Converse for his luxury clothing brand Golf le Fleur, this performance marks a new type of collaboration. The show sold out all 1,400 tickets to an excited audience, some of whom immediately left class to attend.

Kylie Jaye, 18, spent two hours hanging out at Dunkin’ Donuts, waiting in an endless online line for tickets. When the site accidentally deleted her, college freshman Emmanuel decided to head to StubHub, where she and her friends Isabella Franklin and Mary Moore bought tickets for about $50 each.

“It’s a great idea and a great way for artists to see how fans interact with music,” said Franklin, who was unable to get tickets to Tyler’s TD Garden shows in July. “I wish I could be on this show, but I’m here and it’s still going to be fun.”

The concert itself began in the same way as his last album: in the voice of his mother. Opening of the exhibition “St. Chroma” rang loudly as the rapper took the stage to her voice screaming, “You are the light. It’s not in you, it’s in you.”

In homage to the album cover, Okonma wore a green suit, white shirt and pink tie, with a flesh-colored mask covering the upper half of his face. After the album’s opening track “St. Chroma,” he sang “Rah Tah Tah” and “Noid,” taking a break to mingle with the crowd and shout out various Halloween costumes and pay homage to his previous albums, including 2019’s “Igor.”

“Seriously, thank you everyone for coming. It was a last minute thing, but it worked,” Okonma said, then praised the fan in the Lorax costume.

The rest of the setlist included “Darling, I”, “Hey Jane”, “Sticky” and “Take Your Mask Off”, during which he followed his own lyrics and removed his mask for the rest of the performance. The energy intensified for “Thought I Was Dead,” which saw the backing track cut out mid-song to allow Okonma to rap the third verse to an enthusiastic audience before moving into the melancholy “Like Him.”

With the quiet backdrop of the Charles River and the marina, the temporary concert felt intimate despite the number of people in attendance. Against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, Okonma captivated the crowd with her energetic performance and joked with the audience.

“I want to thank you all for listening to the album. I didn’t expect it to be what it is, it’s (expletive) crazy,” he said before performing the final song of the set and album, “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” which he joked allowed him to “ Leave it on a sadder note so it’s more traumatic.

When the show ended, he bowed and walked out to the backing track and the crowd chanting one word: “Chromakopia.”
