“Quishing”: a new scam with QR codes is gaining momentum

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Consumer experts are warning the public about a QR code scam known as “quishing.”

Kishing is reported to have occurred in three states, but is expected to grow, according to the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council.

Fraudsters use this technique to place fake QR codes in various places in an attempt to obtain consumer information and funds.

To protect yourself from scammers, experts advise the following:

  • Check and make sure there are no additional layers of stickers on top of the QR code.
  • If you are in a restaurant that has implemented a QR menu, ask an employee to confirm the authenticity of the menu.
  • Before entering your information, double check that parking meter QR codes are redirecting you to a legitimate website.
  • Don’t scan a QR code in an email or text message you weren’t expecting, especially if it requires immediate action.

To further protect your phone from hackers, be sure to update your online accounts with strong passwords and multi-factor authentication.
