Your old LG OLED TV will soon be cursed with splash screen ads – here’s how to get rid of them

It’s already quite difficult to avoid being bombarded with television advertising, no matter watching Prime Video or YouTube suspension – And LG now makes things a little worse by moving its annoying splash screen ads to the old ones OLED TV models.

Last month, we reported that LG’s latest TVs, including premium OLED TVs, began quietly showing splash screen ads after the TVs had been left idle for a while. Some tests on our LG G4 confirmed this to be the case. Now, Flat panelsHD says this ad also applies to older models released in 2020.

If you have LG models such as LG GX OLED (2020), LG B1 OLED (2021) or LG B2 OLED (2022), You’ll soon see splash screen ads turned on by default. These seem to also apply to later models such as LG C4 OLED (2024)which is a shame considering that we otherwise consider it one of best tvs you can buy.

Currently, full-screen advertising is mainly related to LG and promotes LG’s own channels. But an article by LG Ad Solutions previously suggested that they could eventually be expanded to include third-party companies – and there is evidence that Reddit that this may already be happening. Luckily, there is a way to turn them off…

There is now an easy way to remove the default splash screen advertisement on your LG TV. Just go to Settings > General > System Settings > Advanced Settings.then scroll down to the item with a simple name Screensaver promotion. Turn this feature off and you’ll be spared annoying commercials when your TV isn’t working.

Let’s hope this option remains on the menus of LG TVs, because watching actual TV shows is quickly becoming an afterthought compared to the ads on many streaming platforms.

Earlier this month, the Financial Times reported that Advertising on Prime Video will ‘increase by 2025’ (according to Prime Video International head Kelly Day). It follows the streaming service asking viewers to pay an additional $2.99/£2.99 per month to be rid of advertising early this year.

But Prime Video and LG are far from alone: YouTube recently Introducing Pause Screen Ads And Roku is delivering Instagram-style shopping ads to smart TVs. Let’s hope that best smart glasses like Meta Ray-Ban, such ideas do not come to mind.
