Stop & Shop has officially closed 32 stores, including five in Connecticut.

The regional grocery store announced in July that it planned to close 32 stores in the Northeast by Nov. 2. A spokesperson confirmed that all stores had closed as of October 31.

The company “evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy foundation for the future growth of our brand,” said Gordon Reed, president of Stop & Shop in a press release.

Unsold items from stores were donated.

“The impacted stores are working with their existing local partners to ensure that unsold merchandise is distributed to those in need,” Stop & Shop spokeswoman Stephanie Cunha said in an email. “For items that their local hunger relief partner cannot pick up, such as pet food, our stores have made an effort to identify local animal shelters that can pick up these items.”

Last month, the company announced strategies to win back customers, including lowering prices and creating savings programs that are easier to use.
