Witness: Anger over flood response grows as survivors recount horrifying ordeal

Survivors of Spain’s devastating floods have told Sky News they are lucky to be alive.

But they are unhappy that the government, emergency services or military have not given them more support.

They say they feel forgotten and left without power, food or water, despite living a short drive from one of Spain’s largest cities.

Instead, we saw thousands of volunteers help clean up some devastated cities, while others had to rely on their residents to cope with the extreme destruction.

“Tell the world we have nothing,” says one man during our conversation in the town of Albal. There are growing calls for a nationwide protest against the government’s slow response.

But there are also fascinating stories of survival. In Catarroja we meet Arkait Iniguez, who has returned from high school in Valencia due to a bad weather warning.

“At first I was in knee-deep water,” he says. He wanted to visit his grandmother, who lived nearby, but when he got to her house, the water rushed in so fast that it carried him away.

“The creek was so fast and the level rose. I grabbed the road sign post to avoid being taken away. Some neighbors tried to help me – they threw me a rope, but it broke.

“I was there for 20 minutes. Something hit me – I think it was a car, but I can’t be sure. And then the flow became less strong and I was able to jump into the car.”
