Jean Charles de Menez was wrongly suspected of terrorism after the July 7 bombings.

A senior firearms officer who shot dead a man wrongly suspected of terrorism 19 years ago will speak publicly for the first time in a new documentary.

Jean Charles de Menezes, 27, was pinned down and shot in the head by police at Stockwell station in south London on July 22, 2005, following the July 7 bombings.

The police shooter will appear on Channel 4’s Shoot to Kill: Terror in the Tube, having remained anonymous after the killing.

Alison Pomeroy, the channel’s head of documentaries, said she hoped his personal testimony would “help the British public understand… what has become one of the biggest crises in the history of British policing.”

She added that the interview would also help people understand “the complexity of the atmosphere in London that summer.”

Mr de MenezesAn electrician from Brazil was chased into Stockwell tube station and shot seven times in the head and once in the shoulder by two police shooters who mistook him for a suicide bomber.

The Crown Prosecution Service decided in 2006 that no police officer should be held accountable for Mr de Menezes’ murder.

The incident comes after tensions escalated two weeks after the London bombings. in which four suicide bombers killed 52 people.

The day before Mr de Menezes was killed by police, would-be suicide bombers again attacked London’s transport network but their devices failed to explode.

Scotland Yard confirmed Mr de Menezes was not involved in the attacks the day after his death.

CCTV footage previously showed Mr de Menezes’ final moments as he drove towards Stockwell tube station in south London.

The documentary will explore the shooter’s “understanding of the role of the police as ‘good heroes versus bad'” and “the pressures of being at the center of one of the most controversial moments in British policing history.”

The Crown Prosecution Service decided in 2006 that no police officer should be prosecuted for the murder of Mr de Menezes, but the Metropolitan Police was fined £175,000 with costs of £385,000 after being found guilty of creating threats to society.

The documentary will air on November 10 and 11.
