In a surprising shift, Arab Americans frustrated by the Biden administration’s support for Israel are rallying behind Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, potentially making him a contender for their votes in key swing states such as Michigan.

The traditionally Democratic-leaning community is frustrated by what it sees as unwavering support for Israel’s military action, and some activists believe a vote for Trump could send a powerful message.

“Take credit for your strength.” Al Jazeera quotes Yemeni American activist Samra Luqman, who argues that the Democratic Party is taking Arab voters for granted.

In the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, where Arab Americans make up a large portion of the population, Trump met with community members, receiving a warm welcome that contrasts sharply with his history of anti-Muslim rhetoric and policies, including the Muslim travel ban he imposed during his first term.

Wars in Gaza, Lebanon

For many, the main issue is the Biden administration’s response to the wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Despite Trump’s close ties to Israel during his presidency, some community members see his campaign as a chance for change.

“Even if he continues this genocide with a 99 percent chance, I will take that 1 percent chance that he will stop it,” Luqman said, contrasting that with the “100 percent chance” that the Gaza war will continue under Harris.

The frustration led to unusual alliances, including Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Buzzi, who endorsed Trump. “He says different things, but I can tell you he wants to reunite this country,” said Bazzi, who like others believes Trump’s platform now represents a better alternative to the status quo. Wider dissatisfaction with the Biden administration

The community’s turnaround also comes amid broader discontent, with advocates saying Biden’s policies have failed to address the concerns of Arab Americans.

Meanwhile, Democratic leaders such as Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hamoud have warned against joining Trump, pointing to his record, which includes moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and supporting Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights.

“People in this community know what Trump stands for,” Hamood said. But activists like Lukman see their vote for Trump as a statement.

“If we show we have influence, both parties will try to reassure us,” she said, reflecting a growing belief that Arab American voters will not remain loyal to a party that ignores their concerns.

With Michigan playing a critical role in the upcoming election, a shift among Arab Americans in places like Dearborn could have a significant impact on the outcome, causing major changes in the political dynamics surrounding the Arab American vote.
