More than 150 complaints prompt Calgary police to issue fireworks warning

Calgary police issued a statement to the media on Saturday reminding residents of the rules for using personal fireworks after receiving more than 150 complaints.

“Fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited,” the release states, “within city limits unless handled by trained and certified professionals with a valid fireworks permit.”

Police say they believe many of the reported incidents were related to Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas celebrations.

“While we understand the cultural significance of these events,” said Public Safety Inspector Bartosz Wilostowski, “the sheer volume of calls and the resources required to manage them is concerning.”

Police said that because the fireworks were set off close to the airport, officials had to consider closing the active runway.

“The safety of our communities is of utmost importance, as is the safety of those who fly and travel on aircraft in the area. While we will lead the way in education, enforcement will be applied to those who clearly put others at risk,” said Inspector Calgary Police. Garth Kovalik.

I didn’t know

Many people police spoke to about fireworks didn’t know they were breaking the bylaw.

“Fireworks not only disturb residents, but also pets, causing stress the entire time the fireworks are going off,” Wlostowski said..

Our peace officers work closely with business safety officers to coordinate our efforts and share information when it comes to businesses selling fireworks, which are also prohibited in the city.”

They added that using fireworks without a permit violates not only bylaws, but also the National Fire Code (Alberta), which could result in charges or fines.

Fireworks-related regulations and penalties include the following:

  • It is illegal to use, sell or possess fireworks or pyrotechnics without a permit from the Calgary Fire Department;
  • Violators face serious fines, including:
    • Possession of fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of $500;
    • Using fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine $250; And
    • Selling fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of $250.

“We want everyone in Calgary to be safe, and that means limiting the use of fireworks in our city. Fireworks require a safe, non-flammable environment and responsible handling to mitigate potential impacts,” said Calgary Fire Department Deputy Chief Risk Management Officer Pete Steenaerts. “Given our dry climate, it is important that all Calgarians follow these rules and leave fireworks to the professionals.”

Anyone wishing to report the use of fireworks is asked to call 311.
