Uber offers discounts on rides to the polls on Election Day

For some reason, Election Day is not a federal holiday in the United States, and many employers do not offer paid time off to vote. Hopefully you’ve already voted early, but if you haven’t, it’s worth sharing that Uber is at least discount travel offer to the polls on November 5th to make voting a little more convenient if you can catch a flight during your lunch hour.

The offer will get you 50% off up to $10. To get it, you’ll need to tap the pop-up in the Uber app that says “Ride to Vote,” and the app will automatically find your nearest polling station and apply the discount to your ride.

Uber is also offering 25% off food delivery orders up to $15 with a minimum order value of $25. It’s nearly impossible to deliver food for under $25, so you can easily reach that minimum.

Lyft offers about the same offer on shared rides, as well as on bicycles and scooters to the polling station.

Both companies were made these offers in the recent presidential election as a goodwill gesture to try to gain some public support. If you need to work on Election Day, this is at least a potentially good way to get to the polls conveniently and save some money on the regular fare that has been increased since the pandemic. But we really shouldn’t rely on the goodwill of some private companies for this service. Presidential elections should be a federal holiday, and employees should at least get time off to vote, even unpaid (although it should be paid).

Considering Iowa apparently recently switched to Kamala carefully reviewed survey and races are approaching in other states, be sure to get out and vote this Tuesday. Or in words Hillary Clinton, “Pokemon Goes to the Elections.”
